New Delhi
Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday that opposition parties are demanding discussion in Parliament on the special intensive revision ‘(SIR) ie voter list in Bihar, but the government is not ready to discuss it. Kharge warned that if the government refuses to discuss the issue, it would be considered that it does not believe in democracy and constitution. He said, “Discussion on SIR is very important so that every Indian citizen’s rights to vote can be protected.”
What is SIR?
Special intensive revision is a process in which the Election Commission will re -examine the voter list, so that any kind of mistake, repetition or ineligible names can be removed and new qualified voters can be added.
What is the concern of the opposition?
Opposition parties say that the process of SIR in Bihar is not transparent, and many people’s names can be removed from the voter list, which can take away their right to vote. For this reason, they want an open debate in Parliament on this. Kharge also said that, ‘If the government really believes democratic values, then it should openly discuss SIR.’
Kharge’s question on government’s silence
According to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the central government is avoiding discussion on SIR, which arises that it is deliberately ignoring the issue.
