The central government on Tuesday reiterated that there is no proposal to discontinue the supply of 500 rupee notes and 100 rupees and 200 rupee notes will continue to come out of the ATM. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that the government takes the decision of printing notes of a particular price class in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to maintain a price class mixture to meet the demands related to public transactions.
The Minister of State said, “RBI has informed that as part of its efforts to increase public reach to bank notes used repeatedly, a circular has been issued on April 28, 2025 under the title ‘Distribution of bank notes of Rs 100 and 200 rupee through ATM’, in which all banks and white label ATM operators (WLAO) have been instructed to ensure that their ATMs regularly and Rs 200 have been instructed to ensure that their ATMs regularly Distribute the note. “
About 75 percent ATMs will distribute bank notes of Rs 100 or 200 from at least one cassette by 30 September.
Apart from this, about 90 percent of ATMs will distribute bank notes of Rs 100 or 200 from one cassette by 31 March, 2026. On Sunday, the government termed a WhatsApp message as ‘untrue’, claiming that the RBI has ordered banks to stop issuing Rs 500 notes through ATMs by 30 September. The government said that no such instructions have been issued. This misleading message also claimed that 90 percent ATMs would stop issuing 500 rupee notes by 31 March 2026 and 75 percent ATMs would do so by 30 September.
Additionally, it was advised to abolish their 500 rupee notes and it was also said that only 100 and 200 rupee notes would be available through ATMs in future. Reacting to this message, the fact check unit of the Press Information Bureau said that the RBI has not issued any such instruction and the 500 rupee notes are still valid currency.
A post on X stated that this claim being widely shared is untrue and people were advised not to believe such false information.
The fact check unit emphasized the importance of confirming any financial updates from official sources and warned that the purpose of such messages is to cheat.
