Now history will be made registered postal service: Major decision of Indian post from 1 September

The Indian Postal Department has announced the closure of its prestigious registered postal service, which has ended the 50 -year -old era. From September 1, 2025, this service will be terminated in a phased manner under strategic integration with speed post, aimed at modernizing operations.

For more than 50 years, people have been confident for their credibility, strength and legal validity. The service was used to deliver important documents such as job proposals, legal notices and government correspondence, which played an important role in the lives of millions of Indians.

The decision came after official data, after a 25% decline in the number of registered goods, which declined from 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20, which increased due to digital adoption and competition from private courier and e-commerce logistics.

Merged with speed post
The Secretary and Director General of the Department of Posts has directed all departments, courts, educational institutions and users to adopt a new system by 1 September. The purpose of this merger is to integrate services under the speed post working since 1986 and improve tracking accuracy, distribution speed and operational efficiency.

However, due to the expensive speed post, concerns have also been raised about its ability. The initial fee of registered post was Rs 5 for Rs 25.96 per 20 grams, while the speed post starts from Rs 41 for up to 50 grams, which makes it 20-25% expensive. This value interior can affect rural India, where post offices are important for communication, which can cause burden on small traders, farmers and common citizens who depend on cheap services.

Officials argue that this change is necessary to meet the changing expectations of users in the digital age.

Sour and sweet memories
However, the Department of Posts has assured that the speed post will retain major facilities like tracking and acknowledgment, the move has refreshed old memories in users, especially older generations and rural communities, which considers registered post to be a symbol of faith.

Registered postal roots are in the British colonial period, which served as a reliable medium to send safe, legally recognized documents. Due to widespread use by institutions such as banks, universities and government bodies, it was given importance to evidence and strength of its delivery. The evidence of delivery and posting was acceptable in courts, making it a reliable way to ensure compliance and documentation for government departments, banks, courts and educational institutions.
