In Pakistan’s Sindh province, one person was killed and several others were injured when lathicharge and alleged firing by the police to disperse anti-canal protesters. Local media gave this information. Protesters protesting against the proposed canal construction in Moro city of Nausharo Feroz district of Sindh blocked the motorway bypass road, which made the situation tense. The police tried to restore traffic, but used force on deteriorating situation. According to local media reports, the bullet fired during this time, making the performance more fierce.
To control the situation, the authorities have tightened security arrangements and the local administration is closely watching the situation. According to the report of the Express Tribune, the Sindhi Nationalist organization ‘Sindh Sabha’ had held a meeting near the Hyderabad Press Club but the meeting could not be held due to heavy security and barricades on the roads. Police caught many people and some leaders of Sindh Sabha were stopped in the conference hall itself. Later, the organization said that a team of lawyers came in between and helped and took out their leaders safely.
The Sindh Sabha has been raising voice against the forced disappearance of Sindhi nationalist activists for a long time. This conference was organized on the topic “Let’s take steps to save your land Sindh”. The purpose of this program was to make a plan by the Sharif government against the use of Sindh’s natural resources. For this, different nationalist parties were collected at one place.
According to local media don, about fifty activists of the Sindh Sabha party led by Ashfaq Malik blocked the road. They were opposing corporate farming and canals under the Cholistan project. People in Sindh are angry with the Cholistan Irrigation Scheme launched on 15 February. The people there fear that under this scheme, the Indus river will be used for the cultivation of South Punjab by turning the precious water. In March, the Sindh Assembly unanimously passed the proposal opposing the scheme. This proposal shows the long -standing regional concerns of the people.
In the last few months, several political parties of the ruling alliance, including PPP, have protested demanding the cancellation of the scheme. Many people believe that the central government is ignoring the rights of Sindh water, due to which the anger of the people has increased further. After the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, diplomatic dispute between India and Pakistan has increased, causing the situation to become more difficult. Four terrorists killed 26 innocent people in this attack.
Subsequently, India stopped the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) as a strong response against Pakistan -crossed border terrorism. Amid increasing pressure, the Sharif government announced last month that it would stop the construction of the canals until all the parties agreed through the council of general interests. Sindh lawyers have continued their protest demanding the completely canceling the Cholistan project. He has made it clear that until the government accepts their demands, they will not end the picket.
