India’s Growing Energy Diplomacy

New Delhi, Nov 28: Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Friday that India’s international energy partnerships have increased significantly over the last ten years, expanding from 27 to 40 countries. He credited this growth to enhanced energy diplomacy and a more secure sourcing network established under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

Puri emphasized that India has successfully diversified its energy partnerships across various continents, thereby creating a more robust and secure energy network.

He stated, “India’s global energy footprint is expanding with intention. From 27 partner nations a decade ago to 40 today, we have fortified our energy network under PM Narendra Modi,” in a post shared on the social media platform

This strategic initiative is part of India’s larger ambition to become a significant global refining and energy hub, a vision supported by rapid capacity growth and policy reforms initiated since 2014.

Puri remarked, “A diversified sourcing strategy, enhanced refining capabilities, and reliable global partnerships are paving the way for a more resilient future for India.”

Earlier this year, he highlighted that India’s refining capacity has reached approximately 258 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is projected to increase to nearly 310 MMTPA by 2030, with long-term goals of reaching 400–450 MMTPA.

This growth would position India among the leading refining hubs globally, especially as nearly 20% of the world’s refining capacity is expected to face shutdowns by 2035.

Despite a sluggish global energy market, India remains a crucial demand driver, anticipated to account for 30–33% of the incremental global energy consumption in the upcoming decades.

During the inaugural session of the Energy Technology Meet in Hyderabad in October, Puri noted that Indian refineries are not only world-class and integrated into the global market but also prepared for exports, with petroleum product exports exceeding $45 billion in FY 2024–25, serving over 50 countries.
