Union Railway and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Sunday that India has become the largest smartphone supplier in America. At the inauguration of metro projects in Bengaluru, the Union Minister said that India’s electronics production has increased by six times to Rs 12 lakh crore in the last 11 years. During the same period, electronic exports have increased by eight times to Rs 3 lakh crore.
On the strong situation of the country in the tech supply chain, Vaishnav said, “India has become the second largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world.”
India had 44 percent of all smartphones imported in the US in the first quarter of FY 26, which is a big leap from only 13 percent of the same period last year.
India has taken up the biggest benefit of the decline in the US smartphone shipment assembled in China, mainly due to Apple’s ‘China Plus One’ strategy. According to government data, there are now 300 mobile manufacturing units in India, which were only two in 2014. In FY14, only 26 percent of mobile phones sold in India were manufactured at the local level, which has now increased to 99.2 percent.
The value of mobile phones manufactured in the country has increased from Rs 18,900 crore to FY14 to Rs 4.22 lakh crore in FY 24.
This increase is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach to make India a global technology center and the country’s growing competitiveness in the international market.
India is now a major player in global electronics manufacturing with China and Vietnam, where companies are transferring production to diversify the supply chain. The net export of mobile phones increased from $ 0.2 billion in FY 18 to $ 24.1 billion in FY 25.
