Political Tensions Rise in Assam
Guwahati, Nov 13: Following the revival of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha by seven opposition parties in preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a fierce critique of the coalition, asserting that it poses no real threat to the BJP.
During a press interaction in Gohpur, Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP’s governance, claiming that the opposition lacks public backing. He emphasized that the BJP’s achievements are visible and transparent, contrasting this with what he described as the secretive nature of the opposition’s politics.
“The public supports us because our work is evident. The alliance has no chance against us in the upcoming elections,” he stated.
Sarma specifically targeted the trio known as “the three Gogois”—AJP leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Raijor Dal’s Akhil Gogoi, and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress. He noted that one of them had previously lost to Sarbananda Sonowal in the last general elections, while BJP candidates continue to win in Assam.
He also reiterated past allegations linking Gaurav Gogoi and his family to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, suggesting that evidence exists to support his claims.
These comments followed a meeting where leaders from Congress, AJP, Raijor Dal, CPI(M), and other regional parties convened at the Assam Legislative Assembly to officially revive the Asom Sonmilito Morcha.
The newly unified front aims to contest the 2026 Assembly elections collectively, seeking to challenge the BJP’s stronghold.
The revival of the Morcha is significant in Assam’s political landscape, especially since it had previously fractured due to internal conflicts.
Opposition leaders now view their renewed collaboration as essential for protecting Assam’s integrity and countering what they describe as the BJP’s authoritarian rule.
As the opposition consolidates under a unified banner and the Chief Minister intensifies his personal and political attacks, Assam is gearing up for a contentious and polarized lead-up to the 2026 elections.
