BJP’s charge: Sonia Gandhi’s name was in voter list, before becoming an Indian citizen

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made serious allegations against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi that his name was included in the voter list three years before he became an Indian citizen. BJP MP Anurag Thakur said in a press conference that Italian -born Sonia Gandhi’s name was added to the voter list in 1980, while she became an Indian citizen in 1983.

At the same time, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a copy of a 1980 voter list on X, including Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi in the voter list of Polling Station No. 145 located in Safdarjung Road in New Delhi parliamentary constituency, Amit Malviya alleged that Sonia Gandhi was a citizen of Italy and it is a violation of law at that time.

Amit Malviya claimed that Sonia Gandhi’s name was removed from the voter list in 1982 after public anger, but was re -added in January 1983. He said that this was also against the rules, because even at that time he got Indian citizenship on 30 April 1983, while the date fixed for voter registration was 1 January 1983.

BJP leaders alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s name was added twice to the voter list without citizenship, which is a clear example of electoral disturbances. He questioned why he took Indian citizenship only after 15 years of marriage to Rajiv Gandhi.

Amit Malviya said in the X post that Sonia Gandhi’s relationship with India’s voter list is full of severe violations of election laws, perhaps that is why Rahul Gandhi is in favor of regularizing disqualified and illegal voters and opposes ‘SIR’.

BJP’s attack on Sonia Gandhi

Amit Malviya said that Sonia Gandhi was born in 1946 as Edviz Antonia Albina Mino in Italy, she married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 and came to India. According to the Public Representation of Representation Act 1950, a person who is not a citizen of India is not eligible for registration in the voter list. Malaviya said that his (Sonia’s) name was first added to the voter list in 1980, 3 years before he became an Indian citizen. At that time he had Italian citizenship.

He claimed and wrote, “In other words, Sonia Gandhi’s name was recorded in the voter list twice without fulfilling the need of basic citizenship. First for the first time in 1980 as an Italian citizen, and then in 1983, legally a few months before becoming a citizen of India. We are not asking why he did not delay to accept Indian citizenship after 15 years of marrying Rajiv Gandhi? Is?”
