Whenever the day of August 15 comes, a wave of patriotism runs across the country. The Prime Minister’s speech from the Red Fort, the waving tricolor in every street and the memory of the martyrs make this day special. But have you ever wondered why August 15 was chosen for India’s independence?
There was a proposal to independent by 30 June 1948
In fact, the British government had earlier proposed to independent India by 30 June 1948. But in 1947, the threat of tension, political conflict and communal violence over the partition of the country was increasing rapidly. In such a situation, the final Viceroy Lord Mountbatten decided that India should be given independence before the scheduled time, so that the situation could be brought under control before deteriorating.
Under this, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British Parliament on 4 July 1947 and the date of independence was declared on 15 August 1947 as soon as it was approved.
Why choose this day for independence too
The election of August 15 was not just a coincidence. World War II came to an end on 15 August 1945, when Japan formally surrendered. At that time Mountbatten was in an important position in the Army of the Allies and also got the credit for this victory. This was the reason that he chose the same day for the independence of India, so that it could become double historical memorable for them.
Mahatma Gandhi was not present in celebration
Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi was not present in the celebration of 15 August 1947. They were engaged in pacifying communal riots in Bengal. Gandhiji believed that real freedom would be only when Hindu-Muslims are united. He clearly stated that he is not happy in the freedom gained with partition.
Even today, 15 August is a symbol of unity, struggle and sacrifice, not just Independence Day. This teaches us that even in difficult situations, changes can be brought with the right decision and solidarity.
