The city of Delhi is full of layers of history and streets of stories. But there is also a street in these narrow streets, whose names stand on hearing the name. Its name is ‘Ghost Wali Gali’. What is the story behind the name?
On hearing the name of ‘Ghost Gali’, people often ask, ‘Do ghosts live here?’ But according to the local people and some experts, there are no ghost story behind this name, but some interesting human stories. Two main stories are related to the naming of this street:
1. The story of the facial soaked with soil: A long time ago, when the farm trap was laid around Nangloi, Gehlot Jat farmers used to work hard in the fields throughout the day. When they returned home in the evening, their faces would be soaked with mud. His hulia seemed to be as if a ghost is roaming the streets. Gradually, the name of the street became ‘ghosts with ghosts’.
2. Jat family working at night: According to another story, a Jat family lived in this street, who used to work in the fields at night. Since people usually work during the day and rest at night, the neighbors jokingly started calling this family ‘ghost’. Gradually, this joke became the name of the street.
Where is these ghost street?
‘Ghost Gali’ starts from Rohtak Road in Nangloi Jat area of Delhi and goes to Shiva temple. This street is about 700 meters long and can be easily seen on Google Street View. There is a crematorium at one end of the street and the Shiva temple at the other end, which makes it more mysterious. But in reality this street is a common residential area, where shops, houses and everyday life are seen.
